Are you up for a life changing adventure in Maine this summer?

My thoughts journey towards the shore of a quiet pond Where the mystical voice of a distant loon Calms my inner soul and softens me spiritually. ~Barbara Jean Veilleaux~ I know of a place like this, and I want you to join me there for a life-changing adventure in Maine. Are you in? This place I’m referring to is in Northern Maine, a very special part of my world. (In other parts of the world, one might refer to it as a summer cottage on a lake, but for those... Yoga Therapy for Trauma – Aileen’s Story

There’s a lot of buzz these days about how effective yoga therapy is for trauma. For over 30 years we’ve seen some amazing results.  In the early years we didn’t know much about how or why our particular approach (Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy) worked so well for so many.  Now we not only know our work is “trauma informed” (and pretty much has been from the outset 30 years ago).  It also is clear now from both research and recent developments in neuroscience, that the body is involved when a traumatic... How to Change your Life with Sadhana

The Hindu concept of Sadhana is not something that can be described with absolute precision, because it is often different for each person who experiences it. One definition of Sadhana is given as “spiritual practices or disciplines which lead to perfection, these being contemplation, asceticism, worship of a god, and correct living.” Not aspiring to perfection or being a big worshipper, I tend to prefer the straightforward Wikipedia take on Sadhana, which is defined simply as “a means of accomplishing something.” This “means” can include practices from a variety of disciplines... Make Shift Happen – A Mission of Empowerment

I’m in the business of educating professionals.   My success in that arena is very much governed by how well those professionals are able to serve their clients.  But what does that mean?  And how would I know if I was successful?  For starters, it helps if I can dig down a little and articulate what I’m looking for as the ultimate outcome of my work.  So here’s my mission.  To educate professionals who will help the people they serve to create more empowered, authentic, and meaningful lives by trusting the wisdom... Mindfulness Made Easy

In it’s basic form, meditation simply involves focusing the attention of your mind in a way to become the observer (rather than the actor) of your thoughts. Try this: 1. Sit comfortably in a chair or anywhere of your choosing. 2. Close your eyes 3. Breathe in slowly, breathe out slowly. Long slow breaths without any effort. 4. As you breathe in say to yourself, “I breathe in”, and as you breathe out say “I breathe out”. 5. Repeat for 3 or more breaths. 6. Notice if your mind goes... Read The Rest →

Harness Body Wisdom – Capture the “Ahaa…Moments”

Ever had one of those ahaa… moments during your yoga practice?  You know, the moment when you get sudden insight or awareness that has life changing potential? I think we all have them from time to time regardless of the nature of our practice.  My belief is that when we engage our body and become very present to our whole being through the medium of our body – something magical happens.  I think our bodies have amazing wisdom to share with us and are just waiting for that right moment... Yoga Class Themes and Teaching

Theme based classes have caught on in the last few years and take many different forms.  The basic idea behind most yoga class themes is that it gives students something more to focus upon while engaging their practice.  This is a great idea and I’d like to offer you one that can also be very therapeutic from life effectiveness perspective. In Phoenix Rising our therapeutic theme based yoga experiences are fueled by these four fundamental ideas and principles: Yoga is great for the body but more importantly can also be... Resilience

Resilience can be defined as “an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change”. These days, a normal everyday life is full of “change” and not without its share of the unexpected which is sometimes seen as “misfortune”. Wouldn’t it be great if we could become more resilient in life and bounce back with greater ease and less anxiety?  I believe we can and that yoga therapy and a mind-body approach can be a great help in training us. Watch this short video where I share some of... Read The Rest →

Awareness – The First Step to Authentic Living

Tich Nhat Hahn says, “Awareness is like the sun. When it shines on things, they are transformed.” When we become more aware, we have more choice and can get in touch with what really resonates for us in life.  When we make choices and use them to dance to the beat of our own drum, we are living more authentically. So why not shine a little awareness on your life?  Yet, when most of us try to “be more aware” a few things usually go wrong.  First up, we are “trying” and... Read The Rest →

Practicing Authenticity – Embracing Who We Are

Researcher and Author, Brené Brown says,  Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are. Two words in this definition stand out for me – “practice” and “embracing”. First up, authenticity is a “practice” it’s not just an attitude or belief – it has to be something we actually do, and to make it stick, we probably need to do it daily for at least 30 days to begin with.  This will create a habit. Also we need... Read The Rest →
